Social Discrimination - 1556 Words

During the Spring of 2012, The University of Southern Mississippis basketball team made their first appearance at the NCAA tournament since 1991. The team played against Kansas State University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. During the second half of the game, Kansas State was defeating the University of Southern Mississippi, due to their freshman point guard Angel Rodriguez who contributed many points. The Wildcats were leading the game by 70-64. As Angel Rodriguez was performing a free throw, some University of Southern Mississippi prep band students chanted â€Å"Wheres your green card?† This incident made national headline news and labeled the band students of the University of Southern Mississippi as ignorant, immature, and racist. My studies suggest that identity by geographical location is not the source but the result of human divisiveness. Certain human characteristics (phenotype, kin, â€Å"intelligence,† agility, articulation, and activity) result in social and psychological attachments that culminate in the utilization of hearth, home, university, community, city, country, and continent for human divisiveness (Williams, 2003, p.5). The band members can be assumed American born citizens and chanting â€Å"Wheres your green card?† expresses their practice of racial divisiveness. By practicing racial divisiveness by geography, humans feel a sense of security within their territory. Angel Rodriguez being an excellent basketball player from Puerto Rico and playing in the United States appeared as a threat to the prep band fans who are from the United States. The prep band students felt the need to question Rodriguezs status as a legitimate United States citizen. It seemed that Rodriguez crossed the boundary of the band students perceived territory in the United States because of his ethnic background. The money that is allocated and used in the three divisions is disbursed or handled under one collective umbrella body, the NCAA. For Division I, prospective student-athletes have to achieve the present minimal initial-eligibility in their test scores. The score should at least have a minimum 2.0 GPA in the core courses. However, for immediate access to competition, the prospective student-athlete must have at least a GPA of 2.3 and an increased sliding scale (NCAA, 2012). To continue being a Division II member, it is important that the individual fulfils a three-year membership system which is again divided into two phases. The first phase is the candidacy period while the second is the provisional period. The member must therefore complete the two years of the candidacy period, and one year for the provisional period. The school has a large sway in determining whether one will be a Division II or not, since it is schools which apply for inclusion into a given division, based on the ascertainment that the school has met the threshold required. The same case applies to Division III membership (NCAA, 2012). Division I offers a given number of financial aids as awards, to student-athletes, without exceeding the maximum amount that is allowed. Division I sports issue grants-in-aid as a grant program to help the students settle their fees, buy academic literature and settle personal needs. As for Division II, there is the disbursement of basketball fund. The issuance of this basketball fund is pegged on an individual’s historical performance in Women’s and Men’s Basketball
